My husband says stuff like that all the time - "Your words are sweet, but I don't trust them."

I'm a little overwrought about that poor deer...

Yes. The deer. We all operating under the assumption that she limped to a nearby meadow, the leg healed quickly, and sheโ€™s now living her best life - appreciating all the small things in life following this near miss.

Sometimes I comfort myself imaging that people of all eras have had the same aches. But I donโ€™t knowโ€”a deer limping through concrete feels like a particularly modern pain point. Ken, too. But if we werenโ€™t worried about the earth, or the legal splitting of marriages and possessions, would we find something else to haunt us? I think we would and weirdly, that relieves me. I loved this piece.
